Project 816 | The Ada Study (Access to Dance for Autistic Adults): expanding engagement and dissemination

Sophie Broadgate (autistic filmmaker) will make a longer feature-length style film (e.g. 20 minutes or longer), showing wider autistic representation and experiences of dance, and be intended to reach wider audiences that those of our original project. The short films from the original project have consistently delighted test audiences as they capture joyous moments of authentic autistic expression, both physical (footage of people dancing) and in
discussion (interviews). The combination of topic, population and film-maker have already proved successful. We will build on this success through development of a longer film, the direction of which will be led by PPI contributors.

Film-making shaped by PPI:
– Convene a PPI group of 4 people to advise on the content of a longer film. Three meetings (start, middle and towards the end) with SB and a research team member.
– Meeting 1: create plans for the film and dissemination, including deciding whether to use any footage from the original project that wasn’t included in the three original short films.- Filming of new footage and editing to create a prototype (SB).- Meeting 2: discussion of prototype film and any changes needed.
– Additional filming if required, editing (SB).
– Meeting 3: view final film, agree plan for implementation of dissemination strategy.
