School members win RCGP Research Paper of the Year Award

A research team led by the University of Bristol has been awarded the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Research Paper of the Year Award 2023 for their landmark study published in The Lancet. The paper, titled Amitriptyline at Low-Dose and Titrated for Irritable Bowel Syndrome as Second-Line Treatment in primary care (ATLANTIS): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial showed that a cheap and widely available prescription drug can improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in patients seen in GP surgeries.

The award-winning study is a result of a collaboration between members of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) School for Primary Care Research (SPCR), Universities of Bristol and Southampton, and external University of Leeds.

The RCGP Research Paper of the Year Award celebrates excellence in primary care research, recognizing studies that have the potential to significantly impact patient care and influence clinical guidelines. This accolade reaffirms the importance of continued research in the area of antimicrobial resistance and the essential role of primary care practitioners in tackling the issue.
