The NIHR has announced its 2025 cohort of Senior Investigators, recognising outstanding leaders in health and care research.

Congratulations to the New NIHR Senior Investigators 2025

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has appointed 58 new Senior Investigators in 2025, including 39 new appointments and 19 reappointments. This brings the College of NIHR Senior Investigators to over 200 active members.

We are pleased to congratulate our SPCR colleagues on their appointments:

New appointments:

  • Professor Carolyn Chew-Graham (Keele University)
  • Professor Katherine Checkland (University of Manchester)
  • Professor Miriam Santer (University of Southampton)
  • Professor Tracy Sachs (University of Southampton)

Reappointments:

  • Professor Alastair Hay (University of Bristol)

We'd also like to extend our congratulations to our SPCR funding panel member Professor Ian Maidment (Aston University) on his new appointment.

NIHR Senior Investigators are among the most prominent and prestigious researchers funded by the NIHR and are outstanding leaders of patient and people-based research within the NIHR community. They play a critical role in advancing the success of the NIHR and developing health research capabilities to meet emerging challenges.

Collectively, Senior Investigators constitute the NIHR College of Senior Investigators and are members of the NIHR Academy. They help guide research capacity development and enhance the career paths of NIHR researchers, including participating as mentors in the NIHR mentoring programme.

The 19th annual round of the NIHR Senior Investigators Competition will be announced in summer 2025.
