Cultivating the next generation of primary care researchers through internship placements

In 2016, the ‘By choice – not by chance’ report published by Health Education England and the Medical Schools Council comprehensively examined issues in recruiting medical students to become GPs. This pivotal report identified a need for greater visibility of primary care research among students and awareness of the opportunities for an academic career pathway as a GP.

To help address this concern, the SPCR launched its new internship programme in 2018. The scheme offered medical students a unique opportunity for gain hands-on experience in a research team at one of our partner departments.
