Mental Health
Dr Celia Hulme, a culturally Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) user, shares her journey as a Three Research Schools Mental Health Fellowship recipient and a member of the GROW Researcher Development Programme specialising in mental health.
An Exceptional Opportunity
Being selected for the GROW Programme in early 2023 was a pivotal moment in my career. With 107 applicants competing for just 20 spots, I felt immensely privileged to join this prestigious group.
Unveiling the Magic of GROW
This programme is not just a series of workshops; it is an immersive journey into personal and professional growth. From June to December, we have been exploring, learning, and connecting with like-minded researchers in the mental health field.
Building a Community
The GROW programme aims to connect researchers with similar interests and backgrounds, fostering a strong peer network within the mental health arena. Our first session in London allowed us to meet in person, pitch our research and engage in speed dating activities. It was a fantastic way to get to know each other better.
Beyond Research: Coaching and Funding
The second session was all about coaching and securing research funding. We learned from insightful guest speakers at various career stages. It is not just about research but also about the practicalities of making it happen.
Time Management and Networking
The third session was an eye-opener in terms of time management and decision-making. We also focused on building professional networks and identifying influential figures in our respective fields.
Collaboration is Key
In the fourth session, we explored collaborations and networking. I had the opportunity to share my own collaborative experiences. The lessons I have learned from cross-disciplinary teamwork are invaluable.
The Great GROW Gathering 2023
The fifth session was a great event. Some members from the previous cohorts and the 2023 group came together for this occasion. We had presentations on available funding and a variety of workshops. I actively participated in a Skills Development workshop, aligning with my current goals.
Personal Growth and Future Prospects
The GROW programme has arrived at the perfect moment in my research career. I now have a dedicated GROW Coach who guides me every month in enhancing my skills and performance. In addition to GROW, I am participating in the University of Manchester's New Academics Programme, which is all about enhancing research and teaching practices.
Fostering Connections
Notably, several GROW 2023 cohort members have reached out to me for guidance and to establish connections in the field of deaf mental health. This truly highlights the programme's aim of fostering potential collaborations and cultivating strong networks.
A Strong Recommendation
I strongly recommend the GROW Mental Health Researcher Development Programme to early career researchers looking to enhance their research and personal and professional skills. Keep an eye out for the next round by following www.mentalhealthresearch.org.uk
