At the NIHR School for Primary Care Research (SPCR), we are committed to making research more inclusive.
Research inclusion means ensuring that research is designed, delivered and shared in ways that are accessible, relevant and beneficial to the diverse populations it aims to serve.
We believe that primary care research is stronger when it reflects the diversity of the communities it serves and when people from all backgrounds have opportunities to help shape, participate in and lead research. Inclusive research helps ensure that findings are relevant, meaningful and able to improve health outcomes for everyone, including groups who have traditionally been underrepresented in research.

Research | Black Representation in Primary Care Academic Leadership
A study supported by the NIHR School for Primary Care Research (SPCR) has found that researchers of Black heritage remain significantly under-represented in senior leadership roles within academic primary care in England.

Black in Primary Care Research Event
Following the findings of the Black in Primary Care Research Leadership project the SPCR will be hosting a residential Black in Primary Care Research Event in September 2026.
Our approach focuses on three key areas:
- Workforce: We are working to ensure that the people involved in leading and making decisions about SPCR research bring a wide range of perspectives and experiences.
- Funding: We aim to make our funding opportunities fair, accessible and supportive of researchers from diverse backgrounds, while encouraging research that addresses the needs of underserved communities.
- Research and Impact: We support research that considers inclusion from the outset, with meaningful public involvement and opportunities for diverse communities to take part in and benefit from research.
Across all areas of our work, we are committed to strengthening public and community involvement and sharing learning and good practice across the School.
