SPCR Trainees Event 2024
Wednesday, 18 September 2024 to Thursday, 19 September 2024
Hosted by NIHR School for Primary Care Research.
We are delighted to welcome invited guests to the 2024 Annual Trainees Event at Manchester Piccadilly Hotel on 18-19 September 2024.
- Registration and refreshments on Wednesday 18th September will start 10.30 - 11.15am and the day will finish at 5pm.
- Evening meal on 18th September will be from 7pm - 7.30pm
- Registration and refreshments on Thursday 19th September will start 8.45 - 9.15am and the day will finish at 4pm.
This event is a wonderful opportunity for our Trainees community to get together to participate in talks, workshops and training, as well as providing networking opportunities to get to know other PhD students, early career researchers and senior academics based within the SPCR.
Please note that attendance at this event is by invitation only.
Our Trainees Event will be held at the Manchester Piccadilly Hotel on 18-19 September 2024.
We would like to take an environmentally friendly approach to our event and therefore will not be printing the programme for all guests. Check- in is available from 3pm, with checkout by 11am on Thursday 19th September. The SPCR Directorate team will be working with the hotel staff to help to facilitate a smooth check in process.
Breakfast is included with your booking and you can enjoy a great selection of seasonal food and drink in the restaurant which is open from 6:30am to 10:00am for breakfast.

As part of our Trainees Event, our award holders have been asked to present their research in a 'elevator pitch', on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 September as part of the SPCR Trainees Event. Each talk with be 3 minutes long, with 3 slides, followed by the opportunity to ask questions. We hope that you will use it to find out more about the award holders and their research, and to aid networking.
We would like to take an environmentally friendly approach to our event and therefore will not be printing a physical copy for attendees. The Abstract Booklet can be viewed using the links below:

Dr Merriel is a GP with research interests including cancer prevention and early diagnosis, preventive medicine in primary care, the application of genomic medicine in general practice, and global health. Dr Hammond is health policy and health services researcher specialising in qualitative and observational methods. He has a particular interest in the NHS and health care policy and organisations, general practice access, governance, political economy, institutionalism, and anthropology. Much of his work involves engaging with policy makers and producing accessible research findings to inform policy. Dr Gary Hickey is a Senior Research Inclusion Manager at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Gary helps organisation ensure that public and patients are involved in their research and/or design and development of services and products. Kati Turner is a Researcher working from lived experience in the Population Health Research Institute at St George’s, University of London and also has a role in the development and support of public and patient involvement and co-production there. Patrick is a Director at Diversity Resource International (DRI), a company that supports ethnically diverse and migrant communities. DRI lead on Community Projects, Leadership and Enterprise Courses, Training and Workshops, and Community Research. Patrick completed his undergraduate Psychology (BSc Hons) degree at University of West London (UWL). Patrick continued to complete his Master’s in Health Psychology at UWL. Patrick currently works with several NHS Trusts, universities, organisations and researchers around mental health, wellbeing, improving access and challenging inequalities.
