The implementation of remote consulting in UK primary care following the COVID-19 pandemic: a mixed-methods longitudinal study
In March 2020, UK general practices rapidly shifted to predominantly remote consulting to reduce COVID-19 contagion. This mixed-methods study of 21 Bristol-area practices combined consultation data (2020 vs 2019) with 87 staff interviews. Findings showed near-universal support for the change, with GP consultations reaching 90% remote by April 2020, while a focus was maintained on older, shielding and mentally unwell patients. Telephone consulting met most needs, video was used sparingly, and SMS use more than trebled. However, GPs raised concerns about clinical risk and judging when face-to-face review was needed. The shift was largely successful, but driven by necessity, and the model may need adjustment post-pandemic.
